Baby wearing can make the hectic lives of parents much easier a mom who "wears" her baby can have her hands free for cleaning, shopping, or taking care of another child.  Your baby sling or baby carrier can be folded up and stuffed into a diaper bag so that it is readily available for use.

 

There is some speculation that the carriers commonly found in the "big box" stores, are not beneficial to your baby because 1. they carry your baby by his/her crotch area and 2. your baby is held in a facing out position.  

 

Neither one of the problems listed above have been proven.  However, the speculation with a carrier that supports your baby in the crotch area is that it causes stress on a developing baby's hips and spine.  I don't know if this is true or not, but I remember when I used my store-bought carrier, my daughter's legs would get so cold after about 15-20 minutes - like the blood supply was getting cut off!  It didn't seem to bother her, but it really bothered me.  With a baby sling, your little one is cradled and supported throughout his/her body and does not cause undue stress on any part.  With a mei tai, your baby can be swaddled before being put in, you can hold your little one "froggied" with his/her legs in, or even if your baby's legs are out, by nature of its design, the mei tai carrier creates a seat with your little one's bottom lower than his/her legs, which are supported by the mei tai's straps - it's more of a sitting position, than a hanging position. 

 

With respect to the facing out position (in a typical store-bought carrier), for older babies, this probably wouldn't be much of a problem, but for infants who may get over-stimulated, they have no way of turning their heads, or blocking noise or sights like a baby that is held facing in, held on your back (like in a mei tai) or cradled in a sling.
