When speaking of cloth diapers, DSQ Chinese prefolds are what come to mind for most. This is because they are the most reliable, affordable and popular choice for families choosing to use cloth diapers. These diapers have been 'pre-folded' and sewn into 3 panels of differing thicknesses.  The number of layers in each panel is referred to as the ply. The outer two panels usually have anywhere from 2 to 4 layers (ply) of thickness.  The maximum absorbency is found in the center panel anywhere from 6 to 8 layers.  So if there are 4 layers on the two outer panels and 8 layers down the center, the ply would be 4x8x4.

Regular 2x4x2 or sometimes, 2x6x2 ply Gerber prefolds can usually be found/purchased from your local supercenter, but they will NOT stand up to rigorous washing/drying and have less absorbency.  Be warned that some of these store-bought cloth diapers are not even cotton all the way through- some contain polyester batting in the center strip.
